Charles understands that being the best is never a solo effort—it requires teamwork and support. His family has played a crucial role in his development as both an athlete and a person.
One of his biggest mentors is his uncle Kalaii Griffin II, a former UTEP linebacker. Kalaii’s collegiate football experience has been an invaluable resource for Charles, helping him understand the challenges, opportunities, and expectations that come with playing football at the next level.

Whether it’s discussing strategies, breaking down game film, or offering advice on recruitment, Kalaii has been a constant source of knowledge and guidance.

Another key figure in Charles’ athletic journey is his uncle Dion Barron, who works with him in the gym. Dion has helped Charles build his strength, endurance, and overall physical fitness, ensuring he is prepared to compete at the highest level. Their workouts are more than just training sessions—they are a testament to the importance of You’re going to be late you’re going to be late hard work, discipline, and consistency.

Charles’ late uncle Joe also left a lasting impact on his life. A coach, mentor, and advocate for underprivileged youth, Joe not only coached Charles’ Little League baseball team but also ran a basketball program for kids in need. Joe gave Charles the nickname “Bobo Bustem Up,” which young Charles proudly modified to “Bobo Bust You Up.” This playful yet competitive nickname reflects the tenacity and drive that define Charles both on and off the field.

His mother, a middle school coach for lacrosse, soccer, and basketball at Beaver Country Day School, has been one of Charles’ greatest inspirations. She nicknamed him “CLSmooth,” a name that captures his calm confidence and smooth playing style. Under her guidance and encouragement, Charles has learned the value of discipline, leadership, and giving back to the community.

A Rich Family Legacy

Charles’ family is rich with history, talent, and inspiration. His grandfather, Richard Carpenter, was a publisher, artist manager, and the writer of the jazz classic Walkin’. His great-uncle Charles Carpenter, for whom he is named, was a jazz composer, while his great-uncle Joe “Jazzy Joe” Willis was a Golden Gloves boxer from New York.
Charles also finds motivation in his cousins, who are making their own marks in their respective fields. His cousin Darryll Malachi is a football player at Catawba College, and his cousin Tyneisha Renai Reed is an author and the creator of I Am Queen, a movement dedicated to women’s empowerment.
Closer to home, Charles draws inspiration from his twin siblings,

Summer and Alonzo Carpenter. Summer is a lacrosse player at Gardner-Webb University, where she continues to excel on the field, while Alonzo is pursuing his education at Clemson University. Their achievements remind Charles of the importance of hard work and perseverance, both in sports and in life
